CISO Take

CVE-2026-0988 is an integer overflow in glib's g_buffered_input_stream_peek() that leads to a bad memcpy size and a buffer overflow, which in practice crashes the application (denial of service). It is rated low (CVSS 3.7) with high attack complexity, no known public exploit, no Nuclei template, no KEV listing, and no EPSS data, so active exploitation is unlikely. The reason to track it is breadth: glib is a foundational library with 695 tracked downstream dependents, and it ships inside many Red Hat OpenShift AI (rhoai) container images such as model serving, MLflow, Ray and notebook controllers. Treat this as routine patching: apply Red Hat's RHSA-2026:7461 and rebuild or redeploy affected rhoai images through normal maintenance windows, and prioritize only components that parse untrusted buffered stream input over the network.

What is the risk?

Low overall. CVSS 3.7 with network vector but high attack complexity, no privileges or user interaction, and availability-only impact (A:L). No public exploit, no scanner template, not in KEV, and EPSS is unavailable. The CWE-190 overflow can corrupt memory, but only a crash is documented. Exposure depends on whether an AI service passes attacker-controlled offset and count values to g_buffered_input_stream_peek(), which is uncommon. The wide footprint across rhoai images, a package risk score of 81/100, an OpenSSF Scorecard of 5.4/10 and 137 other CVEs in the same package point to supply-chain hygiene concerns rather than acute urgency.

How does the attack unfold?

Initial Access
Attacker sends crafted input over the network to a service that uses glib buffered input streams.
AML.T0049
Exploitation
Attacker-controlled offset and count values overflow the length calculation in g_buffered_input_stream_peek().
Impact
An incorrect size reaches memcpy(), the process crashes, and the AI service becomes unavailable until restart.

  1. 1) Apply Red Hat advisory RHSA-2026:7461 and the upstream glib fix tracked in GNOME/glib issue 3851. 2) Rebuild and redeploy the rhoai container images and any custom images based on affected RHEL bases, and refresh base images in CI. 3) Use SBOM or image scanning to find glib2 versions in ML workloads, including bootc and rpm-ostree hosts. 4) Rely on pod restart policies and health probes to limit the impact of crashes. 5) Monitor for repeated crashes or core dumps from glib-linked processes. 6) Where feasible, validate offset and count inputs before they reach buffered stream peek calls.

What are the technical details?

Original Advisory

A flaw was found in glib. Missing validation of offset and count parameters in the g_buffered_input_stream_peek() function can lead to an integer overflow during length calculation. When specially crafted values are provided, this overflow results in an incorrect size being passed to memcpy(), triggering a buffer overflow. This can cause application crashes, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS).

Exploitation Scenario

An attacker who can reach a network-facing service that uses glib buffered input streams sends crafted input that causes an application to call g_buffered_input_stream_peek() with attacker-influenced offset and count values. The length calculation overflows, an incorrect size reaches memcpy(), and the process crashes. Repeating the request against a model-serving or pipeline component causes recurring restarts and degraded availability. Exploitation is difficult because the attacker must control specific parameters and the application must expose them.

Weaknesses (CWE)

CWE-190 — Integer Overflow or Wraparound: The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

  • [Requirements] Ensure that all protocols are strictly defined, such that all out-of-bounds behavior can be identified simply, and require strict conformance to the protocol.
  • [Requirements] Use a language that does not allow this weakness to occur or provides constructs that make this weakness easier to avoid. If possible, choose a language or compiler that performs automatic bounds checking.
