CVE-2026-116179: vLLM: num_frames override enables memory-exhaustion DoS

HIGH
Published October 25, 2026
CISO Take

vLLM versions 0.18.0 through 0.30.x let any API client override the video frame-count cap via media_io_kwargs, so a single request with num_frames set to -1 and a large inline video forces the server to decode every frame, exhaust memory and crash the API frontend. The attack needs no authentication, no user interaction and is low complexity (CVSS 7.5, availability impact only), so any internet-reachable multimodal vLLM endpoint is exposed. There is no EPSS score, no public exploit, no Nuclei template and no KEV listing at publication, so active exploitation is not currently evidenced, but the trivial request shape means weaponization would be fast. Upgrade to vLLM 0.31.0 or later, and until then block or strip media_io_kwargs at your gateway and cap request body sizes.

What is the risk?

Risk is HIGH for availability and LOW for confidentiality and integrity. Exploitation is network-based, unauthenticated and low complexity. Exposure depends on whether the vLLM OpenAI-compatible API accepts video inputs and is reachable by untrusted clients. Mitigating factors: no known public exploit, no KEV listing, and no EPSS data yet. Aggravating factors: a single crafted request can crash the frontend, and an inference service outage can cascade to dependent applications and agents.

How does the attack unfold?

Initial Access
Attacker reaches an exposed vLLM OpenAI-compatible API that accepts video input, without needing credentials.
AML.T0049
Exploitation
Attacker submits a large inline base64 video with media_io_kwargs.num_frames set to -1, bypassing the frame cap.
AML.T0034.001
Resource Exhaustion
VideoMediaIO.load_base64 decodes every frame into memory until the host runs out of RAM.
AML.T0034.001
Impact
The API frontend crashes and the inference service becomes unavailable to all users and dependent applications.

What should I do?

1 step
  1. 1) Upgrade vLLM to 0.31.0 or later. 2) If patching is delayed, filter or reject the media_io_kwargs field (especially num_frames) at a reverse proxy or API gateway, or disable video input if not needed. 3) Enforce maximum request body size and per-client rate limits. 4) Require authentication (API key or mTLS) on vLLM endpoints and do not expose them directly to the internet. 5) Set container and process memory limits with automatic restart, and run multiple replicas behind a load balancer. 6) Detect: alert on OOM kills, frontend restarts, abnormally large request bodies, and requests containing num_frames with negative or very large values. Review the GitHub advisory GHSA-4m6g-h9mv-wqjc for details.

What are the technical details?

Original Advisory

vLLM from 0.18.0 before 0.31.0 contains a resource exhaustion vulnerability that allows API clients to bypass the video/jpeg frame-count cap by overriding num_frames through media_io_kwargs. Attackers can set num_frames to -1 with a large inline video so VideoMediaIO.load_base64 decodes every frame, exhausting memory and crashing the API frontend.

Exploitation Scenario

An attacker finds an exposed vLLM multimodal endpoint serving a video-capable model. They send a chat completion request containing a large inline base64 video and set media_io_kwargs.num_frames to -1 to bypass the frame cap. The server decodes every frame into memory, exhausts RAM and crashes the API frontend. The attacker repeats the request each time the service restarts, keeping the inference service down and disrupting every application that relies on it.

Weaknesses (CWE)

CWE-770 — Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling: The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any intended restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated.

  • [Requirements] Clearly specify the minimum and maximum expectations for capabilities, and dictate which behaviors are acceptable when resource allocation reaches limits.
  • [Architecture and Design] Limit the amount of resources that are accessible to unprivileged users. Set per-user limits for resources. Allow the system administrator to define these limits. Be careful to avoid CWE-410.
